Project Aim

The aim of the project is to develop a practical risk assessment framework and associated guidance for assessing the risks caused by the exploitation of marine minerals. The project will provide guidance on strategies to deal with uncertainty within the decision making process. It will assess individual and in combination effects of aggregate extraction.

The project will consider the biological and physical environment:
  • species and habitats
  • coastal processes
  • human impacts

MARA will help planning at two scales:

  • Site specific: assessing the appropriateness of a single-winning operation. How to mitigate the impacts.
  • Strategic regional: how best to develop (if at all) a region for future extraction?
